No Yoga Classes Thanksgiving Week!

Just a reminder that there will be no Yoga classes in Orange during Thanksgiving Week.  Classes will resume on Monday, December 2.

I hope you will get a bit of time during your holiday to unroll your mat and stretch out ... or just sit quietly for a minute or two and "turn down the volume".  That time of quiet is often especially nice this time of year.

I hope to see you in class in December.

And, it's never too late to join in ... if you'd like general information on my Yoga classes just click here: General Yoga Class Info or email me at jackie@peacefulhands.com

You know, our "new" studio in the Silk Mill isn't so new anymore.  We moved to our Silk Mill space  a year ago during Thanksgiving Week!

I love the spirit and enthusiasm and kindness and joyfulness you all bring to your Yoga and to our little studio in Orange.

I am so very grateful for each of you who choose to unroll your mat with me.  You inspire me and my practice, you make me smile, laugh, and you push me to learn more so I can share it with you.  (And, you let me play crazy music in class!) I am so grateful to share Yoga time with you.

My deepest bow of gratitude ... from my heart to yours.

Thanksgiving: Rekindling Our Light

From our Thanksgiving Yoga classes this past week ...

To infuse your Yoga with the spirit of gratitude during this Thanksgiving season, dedicate your practices this coming week to those who support you, inspire you, and keep your heart warm.

As Albert Schweitzer once wrote:

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us."

We show gratitude to the family and friends who support us and embrace us, as well as those teachers who inspire us with their words and actions from afar.

And, why limit yourself to just Thanksgiving week? The next time you unroll your Yoga mat, offer up a simple dedication to someone in your world. Give them the fruits and spirit of your Yoga. Join your heart light to theirs. And, see where you go ...

Feeling Blessed? Here's more on gratitude from our Yoga classes over the years ...

I am most grateful to you ... if you've unrolled your Yoga mat with me once, twice, or countless times over many years ... I am grateful for the kindness and inspiration you give me. May you have much to be grateful for this Thanksgiving.

Holiday Yoga Session in Orange Begins 10/30/13

Fall should be the time for beginning to slow down. Just like trees and plants and nature ... the gentle slowing down, cooling down, resting time begins. So tell me again how did this got to be the busiest time of year for us humans?

The Holidays and Year-End stress seem go against everything that nature teaches us. We just never slow ourselves down.

But, really … if not now, when?

Researchers have found that those who spend an hour or so in a stress-relieving yoga class get that time back in renewed energy, improved clarity, and a stronger, healthier immune system. It’s like recharging your cell phone. You do that all the time … so why not give yourself time to recharge?

So, even though this time is busy, I hope you’ll join us.

6-week Holiday Yoga Session, 2013
Peaceful Hands Yoga in Orange, VA

4:30 p.m. & 6:00 p.m.

Pratyahara: Turning Down The Volume

There are eight limbs of the Yogic path.

Review them all, click here.
We often forget that there are eight.

It’s very easy to simply enjoy our time on our Yoga mats – stretching and reaching and curling and twisting. Asana, the limb of physical movement, is especially popular here in the West because, while our lives may be quite active, our movements often aren’t.
So, we come to our mats to revitalize our physical bodies.

Nothing wrong with that … I would be awfully lonely in my Yoga studio if you all didn’t love to stretch and fold and twist on your mats with me each week!
In almost every Yoga class, there is also time to focus the breath, practicing breathing with direction and purpose.  The limb of Pranayama.

Next up is Pratyahara, the limb of withdrawing the senses inward. This means to turn off the distractions that surround you, in preparation for mediation or simply a bit of peace.

I call it, "turning down the volume on the day."

While people can get very excited over accomplishing a headstand or a handstand, they often write off the value of just going inward.
In  truth, the movement of Asana and the direction of breathing are simply tools to help us reach the higher limb of Pratyahara.

Pratyahara can be a nourishing part of any Yoga practice on the mat. But, it’s even more nourishing when you find ways to incorporate the practice into your daily life.

I wrote about Pratyahara “off the mat” on my other blog this week.

Click here to read about the little kid who showed me how it's done.

Fall Yoga is Here! New Session Begins Wed. Sept 4, 2013

The Bells Are Ready To Ring ~  It's Yoga Time!
Yoga brings refreshing goodness to body, mind, and heart.  And, all you have to do is unroll your mat, hop on it, and see where your spirit takes you. Even better -- do your Yoga with friends!  The Fall Session of PEACEFUL HANDS YOGA begins on Wednesday, September 4.

Yoga can create suppleness in the spine and back, tone and strengthen muscles, de-stress the brain, bolster the immune system, and brighten the heart (both the physical heart and the energetic one).  Isn't that worth your time?

Imagine how good you could feel if you did Yoga every week!

6:00 p.m. - All Levels (Level 1 & 2)

NEW 8-week session begins on WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4
and is scheduled to run
through MONDAY, OCTOBER 28.

My classes are appropriate for All Levels, including Beginners.

While Beginners and others are welcome at any of my classes, if you have physical restrictions that may limit your practice, you may find the easier pace of the early class more comfortable for your needs.

Unlike a class setting, a private Yoga session is uniquely created for your needs -- focusing on the many ways that Yoga can benefit the body, mind, and spirit. Yoga Classes On Break ~ New Session Begins 9/4

Just a quick reminder, that Yoga Classes are on a little "end of summer break" this week.

A new eight-week Yoga session will begin on Wednesday, September 4, 2013.

(More info on the new session coming later this week.)

Thank you all for making our 6th Annual YogaPalooza summer session so wonderful! We had a record number of classes -- 17 -- over the past few weeks, and I'm so grateful for everyone who took some time this summer to unroll their mat with me.  A deep bow of gratitude to SANDY who attended every single class, and to SUSIE and BILLY who each just missed one over the summer.

I look forward to seeing you all in September!

In the meantime, if you need something to fill your Yoga break -- Get Smarter, Get Peaceful, and Get Bears!

On my baseball blog, I recently posted an article that has precious little baseball in it, but included links to online ways to strengthen your brain and to meditate in just one minute.  Both links are well worth the visit.  But, most of all, I encourage you to take a little time in your day, to visit the Wildlife Center of Virginia's CRITTER CAM which currently features 16 bear cubs! They will definitely make you smile.

Find all the links on my blog post here.

Bear Cubs on the Wildlife Center Critter Cam ...
You'll find the link to the cam and to other things you can do on your Yoga Break, here.

Enjoy the rest of the summer and I hope to see you soon!  Namaste!

Each Step Must Be A Goal

I sometimes think that goal-making sends our awareness and attention only to the end result -- the goal we seek to achieve.  And, then we miss the journey itself, the effort, the adventure, the process. And, it's that process that is probably the most important benefit. ~ Namasté

Here Alone Is The Peace You Are Seeking

During this week's Yoga classes ... I shared this wisdom of Selvarajan Yesudian, a Yoga Teacher and Physician (most known for bringing Yoga to Sweden in the 20th Century):

“Yoga never demands the sacrifice of our reason. It only bids us: use it a thousand times more.

Yoga does not require us to give up our active lives. It says simply: act, but know how to act.

Yoga does not by any means wish us to push our understanding aside. It only tells us: discriminate correctly and act fearlessly.

Yoga does not expect us to flee from the world and to retire into the Himalayas. It assures us: the refuge you seek, you will never find in the outside world. It is within you.

Leave the stormy world of the senses behind you, raise your consciousness to the central point of your being and realize that here alone is the force, here alone is the peace and here alone the refuge you are seeking.

Yoga teaches us: do not condemn the world. Deify the world with your deeds, purify the world with your utterances and ennoble the world by your presence.”

~ Selvarajan Yesudian, Yoga Teacher & Physician (1916-1988)

Always Cheer The Underdog & Other Good Advice From Mom

I try not to cross-pollinate my blogs.  I just have two and each serves a different purpose.

But, what are rules, if you can't break them from time to time?

With Mother's Day quite close, I thought I would share with you my post about my mom.

It has nothing to do with Yoga, but it has everything to do with love. And, isn't cultivating love what our Yoga is really all about?

So, if you'd like to take a look, you can click on my "Baseball, Yoga, Life (& me)" blog by clicking here

If you're interested, you can sign up to receive emails whenever I post on either of my websites.  There's a sign up for this website on this page.  And, you can subscribe to receive posts from my "Baseball, Yoga, Life (& me)" blog (just go to the "Home" link on that site and you'll see the "Follow By Email" option on the right-side column).

Happy Mother's Day to my mom who left too soon ... and to all the moms out there who fill the world with so much love!

Finding Simplicity & Peace ~ Inside & Out

I came across this peace prayer quite awhile ago.  It seems especially relevent during times when the fast pace of news and life can seem to overwhelm us and our senses.

It's important during these stressful times to come back to the Yogic practice of Pratyahara -- drawing our senses inward for the peace, quiet, safety, and wisdom that our heart can offer.

I adapted the prayer so that it could serve as a Savasana Yoga meditation this week.  As we keep the Earth Day spirit in our hearts, perhaps this meditation can be of benefit.

A Blessing of Simplicity & Peace

We give thanks for simplicity and peace.   Let us find such places within ourselves. We give thanks for places of refuge and beauty. Let us find such places within ourselves.

We give thanks for place of nature's truth and freedom, of joy, inspiration and renewal, places where all beings may find acceptance and belonging. Let us search for these places in our world and in ourselves.  Let us restore them. Let us strengthen and protect them.  Let us create them.

May we mend our outer world according to the truth of our inner life. And, may our hearts be shaped and nourished by nature's eternal wisdom.

True Yoga Alignment

“True alignment is not where toes are. It’s when the consciousness, the body and mind, and awareness are in alignment. That’s what it’s all about. To me, real yoga is when you create awareness, authenticity. Asana is prayer in motion. That’s where we should be moving.”
~ Glen Black, Yoga Instructor

We'll extend the session accordingly.

Thank you for your understanding ... and I look forward to seeing you soon ... under sunny spring skies!

Neck & Shoulder Freedom! Workshop 3/23

I'm delighted to welcome Certified Trager Practitioner Carrie Heitsch to Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio on Saturday, March 23 as she leads us to new freedom in our neck and shoulders.

The Trager Approach is a gentle and effective way of finding ease in the body through movement and changing our own ergonomic habits that create stress and tension.

Carrie's workshop will help us all release built-up tension in the neck and shoulders (and, really, couldn't we all use a bit of stress relief now and then?) and show us ways to make long-term changes in how we carry ourselves.

Using Mentastics (mental gymnastics) and movement that is suitable for all fitness levels, Carrie will share music, guided imagery, and teach new and practical ways to move more freely and easily in the upper body.  These practices can help relieve headaches, shoulder tightness and pain, and stress in the upper back and neck, and correct our own bad ergonomic habits and patterns.

Using these body cues can also help improve your own fitness routines and how you approach hobbies (like gardening, quilting, and exercise). Yoga practices, especially, benefit from the new-found body awareness that this kind of instruction can provide.

I'll be there.  I hope you will, too.

No Yoga Classes ~ Wednesday, 3/6

Even a little bit of snow affects my satellite internet connection ... and now, with the snow just startin, I'm already starting to lose my connection.

So ... I hate to pull the plug early, but just to make sure I get the message out to you ... if it's snowing Wednesday morning (and it probably will be) ... then Yoga classes are cancelled for Wednesday, March 6.

If it's sunny and beautiful out ... then I'll see you at class!

Stay warm and dry!

Keep Calm & Carry OM

I love to chant OM in Yoga class.

Oh, I'm out of key sometimes, sure, but I still love the vibration that comes with a long and heartfelt OM.

And, I'm so inspired when everyone else joins in with me in class.

In our new Yoga studio, the walls hum with the magical and healing vibration of OM.

OM is considered the sound of the universe -- the universal hum that gives us all fuel and life.  To chant OM is to honor the energy that surrounds us and to tap into it for our own healing and calming needs.

When we all chant OM as one in class, we join our energy together making it even more powerful.

When the whole room OMs, my entire body vibrates with a wonderful, radiant and healing energy.

During the Second World War, the British government printed a poster that said simply, "Keep Calm & Carry On".  Its purpose was to inspire the population -- telling them to stand up to the urgent and dangerous threat of the enemy by continuing their daily lives in a show of strength and defiance.  By keeping calm, carrying on, the British could stand up to any dangers and any threats before them.

So, when I saw this version of the old British poster I had to smile and smile and smile.  Because OM gives us the same empowerment, the same strength, the same encouragement.  It's the same reminder that our inner strength can overcome any threat.

Thank you to the anonymous, and incredibly clever, online OMster who shared this with us all!

NEWS: Classes are already nearly full for the new session ... if you haven't already registered, please contact me at jackie@peacefulhands.com right away to ensure you get the classtime you would like!

My classes are appropriate for All Levels, including Beginners.

The 4:30 p.m. class focuses on a Level 1 practice, exploring basic Yoga poses from a variety of traditions. The 6:00 p.m. class may also include Level 2 poses, more challenging Yoga for those who would like a slightly more vigorous practice (with modifications available for beginners.)

Nothing new here! This is not a change from the current class styles – it’s generally been the evolution of the 4:30 & 6:00 p.m. classes over the past 5 years, but I thought it was time to simply put it into writing.

While Beginners and others are welcome at any of my classes, if you have physical restrictions that may limit your practice, you may find the easier pace of the early class more comfortable for your needs.

SINGLE DROP-IN CLASS – $13 (Drop-in students are welcome to join us, on a space-available basis.)

Or make a commitment to your Yoga & save!

8-CLASS SESSION – $70 (take any 8 classes during the session that work with your schedule.)
FULL SESSION – $120 (take as many of my Monday/Wednesday classes as you like during the session!)
