Thanksgiving Yoga ~ A Blessing, Part 2

In "Thanksgiving Yoga ~ A Blessing, Part 1", I told you about the blessing that guided our Thanksgiving Yoga Savasana, our time of deep relaxation that comes toward the end of a yoga class.

But, you knew I couldn't let class end without just a few more words about gratitude.

After all, each week I am filled with deep gratitude for the people who take time out of their busy days and lives to join me on their yoga mats.  I am so uplifted and inspired by the yoga practices of those of you who unroll your mats with me each week.  I'm overwhelmed by your coolness, your kindness, your wisdom, and your sense of humor and adventure!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

And so, as in all of our classes, we end with a bit of stillness, a bit of meditation.  And ... for our Thanksgiving class this year ... these words:

“When we become more fully aware that our success is due in large measure to the loyalty, helpfulness, and encouragement we have received from others, our desire grows to pass on similar gifts. Gratitude spurs us on to prove ourselves worthy of what others have done for us. The spirit of gratitude is a powerful energizer.” — Wilferd A. Peterson

Thanksgiving Yoga ~ A Blessing, Part 1

This week was our Thanksgiving Yoga class ... one of my favorite classes, and I love to share it with people who have been unrolling their mats with me for nearly 10 years now, as well as with those who have just come to enjoy and benefit from a yoga practice.

For nearly a decade, I closed my Thanksgiving Class with the beautiful and sweet blessing from W.E.B. DuBois "Give Us Thankful Hearts".  If you don't know it, I encourage you to give it a click.

This year, I offered two blessings.

The first came during Savasana, our time of relaxation and release.  While absorbing the fruits of our yoga practice we lit the fire of our true heart of kindness.  And, then we connected our warm heart light with the hearts of those for whom we are grateful ... friends, family, and others ... who inspire, uplift, support, and care for, and about, us through good times and bad.  We built an energy bridge ... our heart connected to the hearts of so many others.

And, the blessing that guided us was this:

"At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us."    ~ Albert Schweitzer

Of course, we needn't wait until Thanksgiving to build an Energy Bridge of gratitude to those who care for us.  But, it's a nice reminder just the same.

The Thanksgiving blessing for our meditation during class is beautiful, too.  So beautiful that it deserves its own entry ...

No Yoga Classes Thanksgiving Week

Peaceful Hands Massage & Yoga will be closed Thanksgiving week ~ November 21 thru November 27.

So ... no yoga classes next week.  But, that doesn't mean you can't unroll your mat at home!

In the meantime ... here's a link to a beautiful poem of Thanksgiving by Harriett Kofalk that I have shared in previous yoga classes: I Give Thanks.

(I will also post the blessings used in this year's Thanksgiving Classes soon!)

May you have much to be thankful for this holiday season. I know that I am especially thankful for all those friends who unroll their yoga mats with me each week!

The Holiday Yoga Session resumes on November 28 in Madison and November 30 in Orange.  I hope to see you then!

Holiday Yoga: Orange & Madison Schedules

I know how busy this time of year can be.  The Holidays and Year-End stress seem to make it impossible to treat yourself to anything.

It’s an endless race isn't it?  Too busy in the spring … then vacations and summer plans get in the
way … fall is a rush of commitments.

But, really … if not now, when?

Researchers have found that those who spend an hour or so in a stress-relieving yoga class or who receive a massage get that time back (and then some) in renewed energy, improved clarity, and a stronger, healthier immune system.  It’s like recharging your cell phone.  You do that all the time … so why not give yourself that same opportunity to recharge?

Anyhoo … we’ll have yoga class in Madison and Orange through the holidays … and I hope you’ll join us.

Here are the Holiday Session schedules ... and note the different lengths of the Madison and Orange sessions; that's just how the calendar worked out.

The current Fall Session runs through next Monday, November 7.

The 4-class holiday session will be on the following Mondays:

Monday, November 14 & 28 and December 5 & 12

A Flow Chart To Live By

The best flow chart.  Ever.

I wish I knew who to thank for this chart ... it came to me from a friend (and it came to her from a friend ... and so on and so on and on and on and on).

So, thank you "Anonymous" for reminding us all that worry is depleting and serves no real purpose.  I suppose I'll still worry but perhaps this chart can remind me to worry ... less.

Enjoy your sunshine ... whether it's outside in your day or glowing deep in your heart.

Groucho, The Buddha Kitty

I don't usually post personal messages on this blog. That was never the point.

And, quite honestly, who wants to read about me? I'd much rather encourage your yoga practice and your good health journey.

But, today, I'm breaking my rules ...

This weekend, I lost Groucho, my Buddha Kitty, who has inspired my yoga practice and made my heart joyful for 13 years.

For 13 years, Groucho rarely missed when I unrolled my yoga mat at home. Sometimes she just came in and sat for a few mintues, sometimes she laid down against my shoulders when I was in Shoulderstand ... or walked in and out under me while I was in Upward Bow or Bridge pose. And, more than once she licked my nose as I was upside down in a Headstand.

Her favorite part was always Savasana and Meditation, when she would curl up under the blanket, or lay down by my head, or rest near my feet as I sat in quiet, just breathing, just being.

I will miss all the joy -- and warmth -- she brought to me. And, all the wisdom she shared.

In 2007, I posted some of her words of wisdom. And, here they are again. She may be gone from the earth, but her essence will always be with me. And, her words will continue to inspire me:

"As I was doing my yoga yesterday, I was joined by Groucho, one of my cats. She often sits in on my practices, patiently waiting for savasana and meditation, when she can crawl under my prayer blanket for a cozy snooze.

"Yesterday, I asked her in my heart to communicate with me, to share a secret with me. And, she told me this:

"I live. I love. I rest."

I will miss her. She was one cool kitty and unrolling my yoga mat will never be quite as joyful without her there watching and hanging out.

I live. I love. I rest.

And, may you Live, Love, and Rest, too.

SOS ~ The Wildlife Center of Virginia Needs Your Clover & Dandelions!

The Wildlife Center of Virginia has its annual spring influx of rabbits (many are very young orphan bunnies) and it's clear these furry little patients don't particularly like the regular "hospital fare" the Center provides. (And, really -- who DOES like hospital food?) But, what baby bunnies and their friends DO love is snacking on dandelions and clover.

Would you be willing to donate a bag of dandelions and clover from your yard?

Last year, Peaceful Hands Yoga Students & Massage Clients provided many, many, many pounds of greens to feed the bunny patients. In recognition of this kindness, some of the Wildlife Center staff have named the Peaceful Hands' Family "Team Bunny."

Join "TEAM BUNNY" by donating a bag -- or 2 or 3 -- of greens and help feed the bunnies!

Here's how ...

If you're out in your yard, garden, or pasture (in untreated, pesticide- and chemical-free areas only, please) and you wander across some dandelions and/or clover, the Wildlife Center would love to have them! (Fresh is better, of course, so if you're coming to yoga class or have a massage scheduled, pull them up in the morning sometime and then bring them in with you. Or drop them off at my massage studio any time during the week.)

Just dandelions (especially the green leafy parts) and clover. A little bag. A big bag. Every little bit helps. (And the dandelion flowers are fine to include.)

The rabbits will need the bounty for many weeks to come ... and soon the goslings and ducklings will benefit from your donations as well. And, a happy, eating rabbit is a healing rabbit (or duckling or gosling or possum), and that makes the job easier for the Center's Vets and Rehabbers.

Email me with questions at peacefulhands (at)

Thank you in advance for helping out these wildlife patients.

Joy. Play. Peace.

I always ...

Wait, let me start again.

I almost always ... (there, that's better)

I almost always begin yoga class by asking those practicing with me to set a small intention in their heart. An intention to guide their practice ... a small gift that their yoga can give to them. We come back to that intention at the end of practice, to allow it to unfold and blossom into a very real gift to guide us on our way.

And, then I offer my intention to all those who unrolled their mats with me ... and, since a couple of you asked me to post that little blessing here, here it is:

May you carry your yoga with you when you roll up your mat.

May it bring you,

, when you need it ...

Playfulness, when you least expect it ... and ...

, always.

So, our practice on March 6 will be perfectly timed as we open our hearts to a new season and a new year!

Our one-hour practice is in the Mindfulness Tradition. There is a guided meditation, a bit of gentle stretching, and walking and silent meditation. Beginners are welcome ... all you need is an open heart and the desire to find some stillness in your day.

Pillows, bolsters, and chairs are provided. Or, bring your own favorite sitting pillow. Fee: Donation. (Your donation supports expenses at the studio, thank you for your kindness.)

I hope you will join us! Email me at peacefulhands (at) or call me at 540.672.9528 with any questions.

Madison & Orange Yoga ~ Spring Sessions Begin March 7

Ahhh ... Spring!

In Eastern science – including India’s Ayurveda – seasons don’t just magically start on a single day. Instead, each season includes a period of gentle transition … when one season slowly ends, and another begins. Here in Virginia, the transition to spring began about 10 days ago.

It’s not just the warming temperatures, lighter days and the happy songs of the birds outside that alert us to the change. Internally, our body just “knows”. We become eager to get out and do something, ready to enjoy the longer days, and take advantage of the special joys and renewed energy of springtime.

Yoga in the springtime shares those same qualities … perhaps we’re ready for a more energetic practice, perhaps it’s a little easier to unroll the mat and practice at home (or maybe even outside).

Flow with the energy of the spring and your yoga will uplift you!

No March “Madness” here … just March Gladness! Our March calendar includes:

* * * *

YOGA IN MADISON ~ The new 8-week SPRING SESSION in Madison begins next Monday, March 7 and runs through Monday, May 2.

Say Hi To RUBY

The Wildlife Center of Virginia announced today that their newest animal ambassador -- a beautiful Red-tailed Hawk -- has been named RUBY!

Ruby was the top vote-getter in the Wildlife Center's online "Name The Hawk" contest. Although, many votes were disqualified because of cheating and "robo-voting", the honest votes were tallied and Ruby came out on top.

Ruby was a name suggested by a local First Grade class to honor Ruby Bridges, the civil rights pioneer who in 1960 entered an all-white elementary school in New Orleans and helped lead the city into the age of desegregation. Her bravery was a touchstone in the national effort to bring racial equality into schools.

According to the Wildlife Center of Virginia the final voting percentage was:

Ruby 35.3 percent
Twizzler 25.6 percent
Poppy 17.4 percent
Phoenix 15.3 percent
Cherry Tail 6.5 percent

It's unfortunate that the voting was tampered with by computer hackers who dumped thousands of votes into the system. But, those unfair votes were identified and removed from the final tally.

Ruby, the Red-tailed Hawk, begins her new adventure now as a Wildlife Ambassador & Educator. She will be seen by tens of thousands of children and adults EVERY year.

She will join the Wildlife Center's human staff in classrooms, at school assemblies, and other events throughout Virginia, to teach important environmental lessons and to help people see how we can be better friends to all wildlife.

And, as her name honors Ruby Bridges, she will also be a wonderful reminder to children of how one little girl's bravery helped make an amazing difference in the work for civil rights and equality.

Click here to read the Wildlife Center's official statement and learn how you can help Ruby and the Wildlife Center of Virginia carry out their important work!

THANK YOU TEAM RUBY! Your passion and caring made the difference. Thank you for voting, for spreading the word, and for helping this amazing bird honor a very special Civil Rights Hero!

Name The Hawk Update

The Wildlife Center of Virginia should announce today the name of their newest education ambassador -- a beautiful Red-tailed Hawk.

If you've been following along, the voting system the Wildlife Center used was hacked over the weekend by someone who flooded the system with thousands of "cheater" votes. The Wildlife Center was able to go through the records and identify votes that were cast improperly and unfairly.

They will know the "honest" vote count soon and I will let you know as soon as I hear anything.

I thank you for all your support for RUBY ... and I'm hopeful our efforts to generate fair votes were enough! Check back soon ... and I'll post as soon as the Wildlife Center announces the winner!

Go Ruby!

Vote for Ruby!

FEBRUARY 21 UPDATE ~ The Wildlife Center of Virginia's Red-tailed Hawk has been named RUBY. Yay! For the results and more information on the "Name the Hawk" campaign visit the updated page: Say Hi To Ruby

~ Jackie

In 1960, Ruby Bridges, a 6-year-old African-American girl was escorted by federal marshals to a white school in New Orleans. Her bravery and willingness to be “the first” helped lead to the desegregation of New Orleans schools.

She was a young girl who became a hero of the civil rights movement. She faced death threats and the shouts of adults who taunted her and tried to break her spirit.

You may remember the Norman Rockwell portrait that immortalized her act that day. Click to learn more about Ruby Bridges: Ruby Bridges, The Civil Rights Pioneer

Here’s how we can honor Ruby Bridges and her bravery.
There is a contest going on through February 21 at the Wildlife Center of Virginia – to name their new Red-Tailed Hawk that will become an education animal.

This hawk was hit by a car and, while healed now thanks to the work of the Wildlife Center Vets, it is blind in one eye and unable to be released back to the wild. It will make its permanent home at the Center and will be part of their traveling education program that brings wild animals to local schools as part of education programs about wildlife and the environment.

Last month, local schoolchildren submitted names to be considered and the top 5 names are now being voted on online. Among those names is Ruby, submitted by a first-grade class to honor Ruby Bridges.

Please vote to name the Wildlife Center’s Red-Tailed Hawk RUBY. You may vote online one time.

To learn more about The Wildlife Center's hawk and the contest, go to
Name The Red-Tailed Hawk Page and then click the link to vote.

Help this beautiful raptor remind schoolchildren of the heroism and bravery of young Ruby Bridges whose courage and steadfastness, despite powerful opposition, opened the doors of education to thousands and thousands of young people.

We just have until FEBRUARY 21 to make our voices heard. Please help give Ruby Bridges a wonderful tribute and help bring her message of courage to young people.

Vote to name the Wildlife Center of Virginia's Red-Tailed Hawk ... RUBY!

Thank you!

February Meditation Practice ~ 2/6 & 2/20

We will meet for meditation practice on the following Sundays in February:

  • Sunday, February 6
  • Sunday, February 20

Practice is a 5:00 p.m. at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio, 145 Byrd Street, in Orange, VA.

Our one-hour practice follows the gentle stillness of the Mindfulness Tradition. We practice guided, walking, and silent meditation. You need no experience to sit ... simply an open heart and the desire to find a peaceful spot in your day. Meditation is not easy (it's amazing how difficult it is to quiet the mind some days ... even for just a few minutes), but the fruits of our efforts can lead to profound and beautiful insights. When we sit together in quiet as a group, the benefits just seem to multiply.

Pillows, bolsters, and chairs are provided for sitting. Or, bring your favorite meditation cushion.

Fee: Donation. (Your donation helps support the expenses at the studio, thank you for your kindness.)

I hope you'll join us. For more information email me at: peacefulhands (at) or call 540.672.9528

No Yoga In Orange, 1/26

Yoga Class Is Cancelled In Orange For Today, Wednesday, 1/26

Who knows what the weather will do this afternoon, but, for today, I'm erring on the side of caution. The Weather Service just upgraded its advisory to a Winter Storm Warning and I guess that's good enough reason to cancel our yoga for tonight.

(And, we'll extend our Winter session by a week.)

Stay warm and dry and I'll hope to see you next week!

Health Is Your Birthright ~ A New Year's Inspiration & Blessing

No, not a resolution for the New Year. You know I would never impose that on you! New Year's resolutions are almost always broken ... through no real fault of your own. The chill of winter inspires hibernation, not a diet, not a new workout regimen. We demand so much of ourselves and can be so unforgiving when yet another resolution falls away when the many demands of daily life takes over.

Instead, I share with you a New Year's inspiration ... a yogic blessing that you might want to incorporate into your mediation practice or as an intention when you unroll your mat.

"Health is your birthright, not disease. Strength is your heritage, not weakness. Courage, not fear. Bliss, not sorrow. Peace, not restlessness. Knowledge, not ignorance. The person who aims for good health and strength of both body and mind is a gem among all humanity. Such a person possesses the true treasure." ~ Swami Satchidanada

May your day be peaceful!

GeneralAn online map to the studio is here:

There's no sign on the building at the moment, but that will be coming soon!

You may park anywhere in front of or along side the building, or in that big open area to the right of the building.  Enter through the front door. (Please do not use the side entrance steps; that door will be locked.)  The Yoga studio is on the second floor.

Please note: the front door is unlocked by 4:15 p.m. Please be on time to avoid missing your class!

You don't need to wait for a new session to start to join in -- you may join in at any time.

My classes are designed for all levels; beginners and long-time students of yoga are welcome (and all levels in-between). Don't worry if you've never been on a yoga mat before. Yoga is a beautifully forgiving practice; each pose is accessible to each of us as long as we approach the pose with kindness, and we never push to the point of discomfort or pain. Sometimes each of us must modify a pose to support injuries or restrictions; yoga can be modified in infinite ways to make it accessible and beneficial to all of us.

Two classes are offered on Mondays and Wednesdays.

The 4:30 p.m. class focuses on a Level 1 practice, exploring basic Yoga poses from a variety of traditions.
The 6:00 p.m. class may also include Level 2 poses, more challenging Yoga for those who would like a slightly more vigorous practice (with modifications available for beginners.)

While Beginners and others are welcome at any of my classes, if you have physical restrictions that may limit your practice, you may find the easier pace of the early class more comfortable for your needs.

We practice basic hatha yoga and I like to explore and play with many different yoga practices -- including flowing Vinyasa Yoga, gentle Tibetan Yoga, and balancing Ayurvedic Yoga. Every class includes some breathwork and time for relaxation and meditation. Yoga is a wonderful way to bring health, flexibility, and strength to the body; calm the mind and relieve stress; and rejuvenate the spirit.

Class Sessions -- Sessions are generally on an 8-week schedule (although that does change from time to time, especially in summer and around the holidays, so check the website to see where we are in a session).

There are two discounts for people who choose to enroll in a full session.

** Students may take any eight classes over the eight-week session. ($72)

** Students may take an UNLIMITED SESSION, coming twice a week or as often as their schedule allows.  ($120)

Both options offer a deep discount over the per-class rate of $13/class.

(Make-Up Policy: Students may make up any missed classes during the session, by coming on a different day or at a different time.  Because of the generous fee discount, there is no carry-over into the next session.)

Students are always welcome to take classes as drop-ins, but only if space is available in the class.

What To Bring/What To Wear -- Bring a Yoga mat if you have one. We do have a few "loaner" mats available. We also have Yoga blocks and other props for your use. Dress for light exercise. Most students wear Yoga pants, leggings, sweats, or shorts, along with a short-sleeved tee shirt. During the relaxation part of class you may wish to have a sweat shirt, socks, or an extra layer available. Yoga is done bare foot. Bring a bottle of water (no other food or drink is allowed in the studio). Cell phones must be turned off during class ("vibrate only" is also distracting to others around you).

Cancellations -- Occasionally classes are cancelled due to bad weather or other calendar conflicts. Session dates are adjusted accordingly. I post last-minute cancellations on our website, on Facebook (Peaceful Hands on Facebook), and email those who are registered in the current session.  If in doubt, check or send me an email.

Refunds -- If you enroll in a session, but must drop out of the classes, please let me know via email as soon as you make your decision. You will be charged for the classes in the session (whether attended or missed) up to the point when you contacted me, at the regular drop-in rate of $13/class, and will be charged a $15 administration fee. Because the session fees offer such generous discounts over the regular drop-in fee, it may be that there is no outstanding refund owed.

For more info on the current session visit Or contact me at or call 540.672.9528.

January Meditation Practice ~ 1/2 & 1/16

It was so nice to see the news in CNN and elsewhere in recent weeks that Western scientists are understanding more and more how meditation strengthens the brain in positive -- and permanent -- ways.

Anyone who sits in quiet for a few minutes knows how refreshing and rewarding the practice of stillness can be. Now science is showing us that the long-term benefits of meditation can be as profound as the short-term peacefulness that meditation brings.

And, that is why I'm glad to offer meditation practice at my yoga studio, Peaceful Hands Massage & Yoga, each month.

We meet on the first and the third Sunday of each month. For January 2011 we will meet:

  • Sunday, January 2
  • Sunday, January 16

Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio is located at 145 Byrd Street in downtown Orange, Virginia.

Our one-hour practice includes a guided meditation, walking meditation, and time for your own silent meditation or contemplative practice. No experience is necessary, just an open heart and the desire to still the noise of outside distractions, if only for an hour. We have pillows, bolsters, and chairs for sitting, or bring your own meditation pillow or zafu.

There is no cost to attend, although donations are gratefully accepted to help cover the studio's expenses.

For more information email me at peacefulhands (at), call 540-672-9528 ... or simply come to practice and give the stillness a chance.

I hope you will join us.
