Peaceful (and Healthy) Gift Ideas!

I go back and forth on the issue of holiday gifts. After all, is it really necessary to buy something for someone as a way to tell them we care for them? And, is it really necessary to expend so much time and energy every December prowling in shopping malls in search of a "perfect" gift? I heard a radio story the other day that said that more than half of holiday gifts are eventually re-gifted or quickly discarded.

Still, I appreciate this time of year, because it may be one of the few times we really reflect on, and show gratitude for, those people who enrich and cheer our lives.

But, in the interest of stress relief, I'd like to suggest four gifts that promote peace and good health ... as well as save a stressful trip to the mall. (And, these gifts are far more likely to be used and enjoyed!)

1) A Gift Certificate for a Peaceful Massage. Give a holiday gift certificate that will look beautiful just wrapped in a bow and tucked under the tree. And, it will be even better when your loved one comes to my Madison studio to redeem that certificate for a soothing massage session or hot stone treatment. One-hour, 90-minute, and 30-minute sessions are available. Call me at 540-672-9528 or email me at peacefulhands (at) gmail.com to order your gifts or for pricing and other info. If you're in the area, I will happily hand-deliver the gift certificate to you, so you'll have it in plenty of time for the holidays ... or I can drop it in the mail to you. My gift certificates never expire, but I am pleased to report that more than 90% of my gift certificates are redeemed within a year.

2) Or ... give a Yoga Gift Certificate for a session of yoga in Madison or Orange or a very special private session. This is a unique and fun gift for a loved one. Just contact me by email at peaceful hands (at) gmail.com or at 540-672-9528 for more information.

3) Or … consider a very special Ayurvedic Counseling Gift Certificate. Ayurveda is the ancient medical science of Asia. As an Ayurvedic Health and Lifestyle Counselor, I’ll work closely with your loved one or friend to diagnose their natural biologic "Dosha" makeup -- the energy of their physical and emotional body that makes them unique. Using that information, I offer a personalized strategy -- comprised of diet, exercise, and lifestyle activities -- that best suits their biologic makeup and will help them best achieve their personal health goals.

My Ayurvedic Counseling Package includes two consultations (on-site or via phone/email) and a detailed written report that can help guide your gift recipient toward a more nourishing diet, more effective exercise, more beneficial lifestyle choices ... and a healthier life. (Follow up sessions are also available.) Again, just contact me at peacefulhands (at) gmail.com or by phone at 540-672-9528 for additional information.

For more information and basic pricing information for my gift certificates visit: Peaceful Hands: Services & Rates

4) Adopt A Wild Animal. Support the health and well-being of a special wild creature. The Wildlife Center of Virginia, a wonderful organization and one of the nation's premier wildlife hospitals, offers special "Caring For Critters" adoption gift kits that provide food and care for its education animals. You can adopt a possum, a bald eagle, a screech owl, and a number of other non-releasable animals that call the Center home. You'll get a sweet little "adoption kit" to wrap and place under the tree. (You can also add cute wild animal fuzzy puppets to your adoption kit ... another great stocking stuffer!) For information, visit The Wildlife Center of Virginia and click on the "Caring For Critters" link at the bottom of the page.

I hope these ideas save you a trip to the mall ... so you can spend that time with those you love.

Uplifting Others. Uplifting Ourselves.

During this holiday season, when stress can get in the way of joy and when the body can be depleted by the little cold and flu bugs that scurry about, I came upon this quote which I wanted to share with you:

"The greatest way to ensure your own happiness, is to do all that you can to uplift the lives of others." ~ Sharon Gannon

But, remember ... to have the energy to uplift others, you must nurture and nourish your own energy first. Support your immune system with good diet and habits. Unroll your yoga mat and stretch out. Sit in quiet for a few minutes and let your mind unwind. Treat yourself to a good book or a sweet chocolate. Do something nice for yourself and let your body absorb and enjoy that kindness. Then share that sweetness with those you meet along your day.

December Meditation Practice ~ Sunday, 12/19

We will meet just once in December for Meditation:

  • Sunday, December 19 at 5:00 p.m.

Practice is at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio, 145 Byrd Street in Orange, VA.

(We usually meet on the first and third Sunday of each month, but this Sunday conflicts with the start of the Orange Holiday parade which makes getting to the studio difficult or impossible, depending on which part of town you're in. So, that's why just one meeting this month.)

Our one-hour session includes guided, walking, and silent meditation in an encouraging and nurturing environment. Even if you’ve never sat in dedicated quiet before, you will enjoy bountiful benefits for the body and a more peaceful mind. Your heart will thank you for the moments of stillness.

There is no charge to attend, although donations are gratefully accepted to help cover studio expenses. Email peacefulhands (at) gmail.com or call 540-672-9528 for info.
