Orange Yoga Begins Wed. September 2, 2009

Time to breathe and unroll your mat at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio.

The Autumn Session of Orange Yoga begins on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio in downtown Orange, Virginia (145 Byrd Street). (Yes ... We do begin the week BEFORE Labor Day!)

The 8-week session is scheduled to run from Wednesday, September 2 through Wednesday October 21.

Madison Yoga Starts Early -- August 31, 2009

Finally ... Time to get back into the swing of our yoga classes!

The Autumn Session of Madison Yoga begins on Monday, August 31, 2009 at Wetsel Middle School Library in Madison, Virginia. (Yes, our session will begin BEFORE Labor Day this year!)

The 8-week session is scheduled to run from Monday, August 31 through Monday, October 26. (NOTE: There will be no class on Labor Day, September 7.)

Madison classes are offered through the Madison Department of Parks & Facilities.

Madison & Orange Yoga ~ 2009-2010 Info

The 2009-2010 Yoga Seasons begin the week of August 31. here is the general information on classes in Madison & Orange:

YOGA IN MADISON

Two classes are held on Mondays -- at 4:00 p.m. and at 5:30 p.m. at Wetsel Middle School in the Library. Classes are offered through the Madison Department of Parks & Facilities.

Location -- Wetsel Middle School is located on Route 29, adjacent to the High School. Park in front of the school and come in the main doors. The library is ahead, door on the LEFT.

Cost -- Class costs are: $12 a class or, join for an 8-week session at the discounted rate of $64. Your first class with me is free. (Registered students also receive discounts on special classes, workshops, and retreats.)

What to Bring & What to Wear -- Please bring a yoga mat, if you have one, or a beach towel. We practice on a carpeted floor, but a bit of extra cushioning is helpful. Dress comfortably for exercise; yoga is done barefoot on your mat. You may wish to bring a sweater and socks or even a light blanket for the relaxation session at the end of class.

Make-Up Classes -- If you're registered for a session and miss a class you can make up the class by attending a class in Orange. Please complete your make-ups during the session (give or take a week). No need to ask if you can make-up a class ... you're always welcome in Orange!


YOGA IN ORANGE

Two classes are held on Wednesdays -- at 4:30 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio in downtown Orange.

Location -- Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio is located at 145 Byrd Street in Orange. This is one block off of Main Street, approximately one block from the Main Street/Byrd Street stoplight (the 7-11 Stoplight). Coming from Main Street, one block over the train tracks, turn RIGHT at the 7-11 stoplight, and the building is one block ahead on the LEFT. The building is a brick building with a green awning (Johnny's Furniture Repair & Fox Clocks signs are out in front). Please park on the side of the building. Come in the main doors and follow the "Yoga" signs down the hall.

We have some "loaner mats" available at the Orange studio as well as pillows, bolsters, blankets and other props (which, contrary to popular belief, I do use now and then!). You don't need to wait for a new session to start to join in -- you may join in at any time.

My classes are designed for all levels; beginners and long-time students of yoga are welcome (and all levels in-between). Don't worry if you've never been on a yoga mat before. Yoga has been around for thousands and thousands of years, in the great cosmic scheme of things, we're ALL beginners.

We practice basic hatha yoga and I like to explore and play with many different yoga practices -- including gentle Tibetan yoga, energizing Anusara yoga, and balancing Ayurvedic yoga. Every class includes some breathwork and time for relaxation and meditation. In addition, I like to blend in other beneficial practices, including a bit of pilates, tao-ist movement, and tai chi now and then. Yoga is a wonderful way to bring health, flexibility, and strength to the body; calm the mind and relieve stress; and rejuvenate the spirit.

Cancellations -- Occasionally classes are cancelled due to bad weather or other calendar conflicts. Session dates are adjusted accordingly. I post last-minute cancellations on this page, email the "yoga email list" as soon as an unexpected cancellation arises, and I call registered students to let them know.

Wildlife Center ~ Fall Open House Schedule

The Wildlife Center of Virginia has announced its Fall Open House schedule. The Center offers open houses just twice a year. This is a wonderful chance to see the Center’s medical facilities and meet some of the education animals – including owls, eagles, possums, tortoises, and snakes – that live at the Center.

The open houses are free, but you must reserve your spot in advance, and the spots fill quickly. Here are the upcoming dates:

  • Sunday, August 30
  • Sunday, September 13
  • Sunday, September 27
  • Sunday, October 18
  • Sunday, October 25

The Center will have three separate sessions each day – at 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. This is a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of the nation’s premier wildlife hospital, as well as meet some of the wildlife that serve as the Center’s education staff and ambassadors. It’s well worth the pretty drive to Waynesboro!

August Yoga In Orange

While we take a brief break from Madison Yoga this month, there will be yoga classes in Orange on the following days and times:

The heavy and hot days of August are often chaotic for our routines. Vacations, day trips to the beach, the start of a new school year, can all upset our regular activities. Sometimes my yoga classes are full ... sometimes they are quite small (teeny tiny!). I can't predict from one class to the next.

And so, August is my time to really play with yoga with you, so each of these classes during the month will focus on a specific theme ... all playful, some classic yoga, some not so classic at all. In any event, I won't post all the details here. August Meditation Schedule

"Life Is A Progress, And Not A Station." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Do you sometimes think that meditation is just sitting still for awhile? Maybe so ... the physical body is quiet ... the mind is calm ... but in that peaceful stillness the spirit opens and grows wide with all the fresh, new space that the quiet allows. So, I guess we could say, with thanks to Emerson: "Meditation is a Progress, and not a Station."

Meditation practice will be at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio (145 Byrd St, Orange) on the following Sundays:

  • Sunday, August 2
  • Sunday, August 16

The one-hour practice begins at 5:00 p.m.

Our practice includes guided meditation, a brief reading, walking meditation, and a quiet sitting practice. No previous experience is necessary, just an open heart and the desire to find stillness within. (We have pillows for floor-sitting and chairs available. Or bring your favorite meditation cushion.)

There is no cost to attend, but donations are gratefully accepted to help cover expenses at the studio.
