There will be no Meditation Practice at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio this Sunday 12/20. Even though the snow storm should be over, the parking lot at the studio's building will not get any attention until Monday.

So, let your meditation practice be peaceful and joyful -- as you stay cozy and warm inside.

December Meditation Schedule

Meditation practice will be held at 5:00 p.m. on the following Sundays in December:

  • Sunday, December 6
  • Sunday, December 20

Practice is at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio, 145 Byrd Street in Orange.

With the holiday season upon us, there is often little time to slow down and just sit. Maybe meditation practice is a way to force ourselves into stillness, if only for an hour. The quiet of meditation can help settle our mind and soften our heart.

In this season of peace ... when "comfort and joy" are what we wish to each other, perhaps it is time to also wish comfort and joy for ourselves. Meditation can offer that gift.

Here are the details: Our one-hour practice includes a guided meditation, a short reading, walking meditation, and silent meditation. Pillows for floor sitting and chairs are available. Our gentle practice is open to everyone, even if it's your very first time.

There is no cost to attend, but donations are gratefully accepted to help cover studio expenses.

For more info, please email peacefulhands (at) gmail.com or call 540-672-9528.

Madison Holiday Yoga Session Starts 11/9

Don't blame the holidays ...

It's so easy to blame the holidays, or the garden chores of springtime, or the vacation schedules in the summer, or the back-to-school craziness of fall as reasons why you don't have time for yoga (or whatever kindness you would like to treat yourself to).

Yoga gives back in so many ways ... and all it asks of you is to unroll your mat for an hour or so now and then and let it bring you to a peaceful place.

So get in the holiday spirit of joy and peace by coming to Yoga!

The HOLIDAY SESSION in Madison begins Monday, November 9 and is a mini-session -- just four classes: 11/9, 11/16, 11/30 and 12/7. (No classes in Madison or Orange Thanksgiving week).

Our focus for this session is on finding peace within and easing out the stress that often comes around this time of year.

Cost is $32 for the full session (or $12/class).

For info on location and other class details click on "General Yoga Info" or "Madison Yoga" over on the right hand column. Or email me at peacefulhands (at) gmail.com or call 540-672-9528.

If it's your first time meditating or your one-thousandth, there is joy and great benefits to be found when you join your quiet energy in with a group.

Orange Yoga Holiday Session Begins 10/28

It's the time of year when many of us think – there's no time for yoga, there's no time to quiet down, there's no time to fit in some "me" space.

But, it is exactly at these busy times that we need our yoga more than ever. We can turn to yoga for the amazing peace it provides, the calming energy that can reboot our nervous system, the gentle awakening that can revitalize our immune system, and the wonderful boost it can give to every fiber of our being. As the days turn chilly, our yoga warms us from the inside. And, as the days turn busy, our yoga can give us a spacious heart.

The Holiday Session begins at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio in Orange on Wednesday, October 28, 2009.

Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio is in downtown Orange, Virginia (145 Byrd Street).

This is a special SIX-week session and it is scheduled to run from Wednesday, October 28 through Wednesday, December 9. (There will be no classes – in Orange or Madison – Thanksgiving week.)

Cost is $48 for the 6-week session or $12/class.

For info on location and other details click on "General Yoga Class Info" and "Orange Yoga" under Topics on the right column. Or email me at peacefulhands (at) gmail.com with questions. I hope to see you at class!

ADDITIONAL DETAILS:

You don't need to wait for a new session to start to join in -- you may join in at any time.

My classes are designed for all levels; beginners and long-time students of yoga are welcome (and all levels in-between). Don't worry if you've never been on a yoga mat before. Yoga has been around for thousands and thousands of years, in the great cosmic scheme of things, we're ALL beginners.

We practice basic hatha yoga and I like to explore and play with many different yoga practices -- including gentle Tibetan yoga, energizing Anusara yoga, and balancing Ayurvedic yoga. Every class includes some breathwork and time for relaxation and meditation. In addition, I like to blend in other beneficial practices, including a bit of pilates, tao-ist movement, and tai chi now and then. Yoga is a wonderful way to bring health, flexibility, and strength to the body; calm the mind and relieve stress; and rejuvenate the spirit.

Cancellations -- Occasionally classes are cancelled due to bad weather or other calendar conflicts. Session dates are adjusted accordingly. I post last-minute cancellations on this page, email the "yoga email list" as soon as an unexpected cancellation arises, and I call registered students to let them know.

For more info on the current session click on the "Madison Yoga" or "Orange Yoga" label at the bottom of this post, which will bring up a list of previous postings. Or contact me at peacefulhands (at) gmail.com or call 540.672.9528.

Wildlife Center ~ Fall Open House Schedule

The Wildlife Center of Virginia has announced its Fall Open House schedule. The Center offers open houses just twice a year. This is a wonderful chance to see the Center’s medical facilities and meet some of the education animals – including owls, eagles, possums, tortoises, and snakes – that live at the Center.

The open houses are free, but you must reserve your spot in advance, and the spots fill quickly. Here are the upcoming dates:

  • Sunday, August 30
  • Sunday, September 13
  • Sunday, September 27
  • Sunday, October 18
  • Sunday, October 25

The Center will have three separate sessions each day – at 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. This is a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of the nation’s premier wildlife hospital, as well as meet some of the wildlife that serve as the Center’s education staff and ambassadors. It’s well worth the pretty drive to Waynesboro!

For more info, visit the Wildlife Center’s website at www.wildlifecenter.org. Or to reserve a place at the open house contact the Center at 540.942.9453 or wildlife@wildlifecenter.org

August Yoga In Orange

While we take a brief break from Madison Yoga this month, there will be yoga classes in Orange on the following days and times:

Monday, August 3 at 4:30 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. ~ Beatles Yoga

Wednesday, August 5 at 4:30 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. ~ Flow (Vinyasa) Yoga

Monday, August 10 at 4:30 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. ~ Total Relaxation & Yoga Nidra

Wednesday, August 12 at 6:00 p.m. only ~ Beatles Yoga (last chance before this class is retired ... for awhile anyway)

Wednesday, August 19 at 4:30 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. ~ Woodstock Celebration

All classes are in Orange at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio (145 Byrd Street in Orange, Va)

The heavy and hot days of August are often chaotic for our routines. Vacations, day trips to the beach, the start of a new school year, can all upset our regular activities. Sometimes my yoga classes are full ... sometimes they are quite small (teeny tiny!). I can't predict from one class to the next.

And so, August is my time to really play with yoga with you, so each of these classes during the month will focus on a specific theme ... all playful, some classic yoga, some not so classic at all. In any event, I won't post all the details here. If you're interested, aren't familiar with my classes, and would like more information, please email me at peacefulhands (at) gmail.com or give me a call at 540-672-9528. I'll be happy to explain what will unfold in these special classes.

And, stick around for the Fall session of yoga, which begins August 31 in Madison and September 2 in Orange. Yes, we'll be back BEFORE Labor Day. More details coming soon ...

August Meditation Schedule

"Life Is A Progress, And Not A Station." ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Do you sometimes think that meditation is just sitting still for awhile? Maybe so ... the physical body is quiet ... the mind is calm ... but in that peaceful stillness the spirit opens and grows wide with all the fresh, new space that the quiet allows. So, I guess we could say, with thanks to Emerson: "Meditation is a Progress, and not a Station."

Meditation practice will be at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio (145 Byrd St, Orange) on the following Sundays:

  • Sunday, August 2
  • Sunday, August 16

The one-hour practice begins at 5:00 p.m.

Our practice includes guided meditation, a brief reading, walking meditation, and a quiet sitting practice. No previous experience is necessary, just an open heart and the desire to find stillness within. (We have pillows for floor-sitting and chairs available. Or bring your favorite meditation cushion.)

There is no cost to attend, but donations are gratefully accepted to help cover expenses at the studio. Wildlife Center To Release 3 Bald Eagles On Saturday

It's your chance to see the Wildlife Center of Virginia release three bald eagles back into the wild. It's the first time ever that the Center has released THREE eagles at one time ... and the public is invited.

The release is scheduled for this Saturday, July 25 at Mason Neck State Park, which is located in Southern Fairfax County (about a 90-min drive or so from Madison/Orange).

You can find more information on the Wildlife Center's website: http://www.wildlifecenter.org/wp/july25/

I'll be there ... and hope you might join me. What a wonderful chance to see these great eagles get a second chance in the wild!

Wildlife Center "Critters" At Madison Fair Saturday, 7/18

The Wildlife Center of Virginia, and some of its wonderful wild education animals, will be at the Madison County Fair on Saturday, July 18.

The presentation will be at 4:00 p.m. (I think it will be at the Small Stage; that's where the Center usually sets up.)

This is a terrific way to learn more about the Center and, most important, to meet some of their amazing wildlife ambassadors.

They will be giving their popular "Creatures of the Night" presentation ... so it's a good bet you'll meet an owl ... a possum ... and who knows who else might come along!

I'll be there in the audience and I hope you'll stop by, too.

In the heat of summer, use the gentle art of mindfulness and meditation to bring cooling to body, mind, and spirit.

Meditation practice will be at Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio (145 Byrd St, Orange) on the following Sundays:

  • Sunday, July 5
  • Sunday, July 19

Our practice includes guided meditation, a brief reading, walking meditation, and a quiet sitting practice. No previous experience is necessary, just an open heart and the desire to find stillness within. (We have pillows for floor-sitting and chairs available. Or bring your favorite meditation cushion.)

The Mystery of Namasté & Yoga Blessings

For many years, I attended a yoga class where the teacher would close our practice by joining her hands together and saying, “Namasté”. We all sat quietly and then class was done. I eventually discovered that I was not alone; I don't think any of us in that class knew what Namasté meant, no one knew to return the greeting, and the instructor never told us. She was a very good instructor, don't get me wrong; she just assumed that many of us were smarter than we actually were.

Today, in the Wikipedia world, one can find the meaning of most anything quite quickly. But those were slower times and so we wondered.

By the way, I define “Namasté” as “The divine within me bows to the divine within you.”

It's sort of like a sacred “Aloha” greeting -- it can mean hello or goodbye.

But, it's much more than that, since it looks much deeper and with great respect to the person being addressed.  In this greeting we see beyond the physical, we bow to the purest essence of the person before us.  That's the light that resides at one's heart.  I sometimes like to say that Namasté means, "I can see past your bad hair day and all the stresses and strains you endure, to see and honor the true, beautiful and vibrant you inside."

So, my first suggestion today is for yoga instructors to not assume that their students know what they’re talking about. Sanskrit is a beautiful sacred language. But, a bit of translation can help those sacred words blossom more fully in a student’s heart.

And, now ... to practice what I preach. I’ve been closing recent classes with a loving yoga blessing. I offer the translation in class as well. But, in the off-chance that someone actually wanders through this blog (aside from my journeys through looking for typos), I offer it here. It’s a beautiful blessing and it inspires my practice.

Loka Samasta Sukhino Bhavantu
There are many translations from the very simple “May all be happy” to very long and detailed translations. But, here’s the one that I like best:

“May the universe be filled with peace and joy, love and light.”

And, just to muddy the waters further (which I’ll leave as a challenge for true Sanskrit scholars, not a novice like me), many, many sacred Sanskrit words don’t translate easily. They are deeply felt but don’t easily translate to words. There are many Sanskrit blessings and prayers that are offered with myriad translations that are all over the map. Sometimes, a Sanskrit scholar will admit a word or blessing defies true translation at all. And, that is why a Sanskrit blessing may do better when pulled out of your brain and instead planted in the loving garden of your heart.

Another beautiful Yoga blessing comes from the sacred Bhagavad Gita.  I call this blessing "Be Fearless & Pure" ... and you can find it here:  Be Fearless & Pure

I like to share other blessings in my Yoga classes from time to time, and when I think about it, I add them to this blog.  To find them all in one place, just click on my Meditations & Blessings link:  Yoga Meditations & Blessings

Or, even better, LIKE Peaceful Hands on Facebook, where I regularly post Yoga blessings and other information on the healing benefits of Yoga.  Here's the link: Peaceful Hands on Facebook

Summer Yoga Retreat ~ Saturday, June 27

Enjoy a Yoga "Mini Retreat" to celebrate the beginning of Summer and to refresh the body, mind, and spirit.

The Summer Retreat will be held:

Saturday, June 27, 2009
8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio
145 Byrd Street in Orange, Virginia

The day will include yoga to help cool and balance our internal energies as we open to the sunshine and heat of the summer. There will also be time for learning a self-massage practice, guided meditation, reflection, and we'll reap the wonderfully restorative energy of our shared yoga practice.

Spending an extended period of time with your yoga and meditation can be a wonderful way to inspire your personal practice and refresh your internal energy.

The heavy heat and humidity of Virginia summers can sap our energy. With an Ayurvedic focus, we’ll do yoga that will balance our internal energies with coolness and lightness.

I know that summer is a busy time for people, so I will only hold this retreat if there are enough people signed up. Please let me know as soon as possible if you are interested.

Our Orange yoga studio is a sacred space for yoga and meditation. It is also a small space, so there is very limited space available for this retreat. Register early to ensure your spot.

The cost is $45 for the retreat. SPECIAL: For students who are currently registered in either my Madison or Orange spring yoga session, the cost is $40.

I hope you will join us for this lovely way to celebrate the sun and the energy of summer! For information or to register, contact me here at peacefulhands (at) gmail.com or call me at 540-672-9528.

What Is Necessary After All ...

On a day when things haven't gone quite right ... and the world seems to be spinning a bit out of control and I'm not hanging on too well ...

... it's nice to sit in my studio, safe and dry, watching the thunderstorm unfold outside.

And, I haven't shared a blessing or a poem on this page in a long, long while. And, so here you go. This is from Rainer Maria Rilke, an early 20th century German poet. His poem for you today:

What is necessary, after all,
Is only this: solitude.
Vast inner solitude.
To walk inside yourself
and meet no one for hours --
that is what you must be able to attain.

Enjoy the quiet, peaceful place that is inside you. Ahh, paradise!

More Clover & Dandelion Thank You's

Updated ~ May 18, 2009

The bunnies and other Wildlife Center patients are rejoicing at all the tasty clover and dandelions people have been donating from their yards, pastures, and gardens.

Collecting a little bag of clover from your lawn is a small and easy thing to do, but it has been extremely helpful to the Wildlife Center patients. The Center is currently caring for 28 bunnies and they are devouring a grocery bag full of greens every day. With duckling and gosling season looming, the Center will definitely put every bit of greens we can supply to good use!

So, some more thank you's today to these recent dandelion and clover contributors:

Andrea ... Pam ... Carolyn (again!) ... Beppy (again!) ... Shannon (again!) ... Debbie ... Ellen ... Sandy ... Elisabeth (again!) ... and Sue.

I hope I haven't forgotten anybody. Do let me know if I have.

The Wildlife Center can still use your contributions ... scroll down for additional info on what to pick and where to bring it! Thank you!

Keep The Clover & Dandelions Coming!

The bunnies at the Wildlife Center are rejoicing ... and so thankful for the generosity of everyone who has scoured their lawns and gardens for clover and dandelions ... often in the rain!

The rehabbers at the Wildlife Center also thank you for being so kind and the need will continue for many weeks to come. And, soon, the ducklings and goslings will be coming in and they will love the greens to munch on as well.

Scroll down a message or two for the specifics on what to gather and where to bring it.

And, I want to send a delighted bunny cheer to the following folks who have been so generous so far:

Michelle ... Beppy ... Dotty ... Nancy ... Shannon ... Carolyn, Ruth & Ed ... Tom & Elisabeth ... Carol & Barbara ... and Malcolm.
Thank you!

Peaceful Hands Yoga Studio is at 145 Byrd Street in Orange, VA.

General Info: Cost: $12/class or a discounted $64 for the 8-week session (that’s like getting a couple classes for free!) The Wildlife Center Needs Your Dandelions & Clover!

The Wildlife Center of Virginia has its annual spring influx of rabbits and it's clear they don't particularly like the regular "hospital fare" the Center provides. What they do love is snacking on dandelions and clover.

Would you be willing to donate a bag of dandelions and clover from your yard?

If you're out in your yard, garden, or pasture (in untreated, pesticide- and chemical-free areas only, please) and you wander across some dandelions and/or clover, the Wildlife Center would love to have them! (Fresh is better, of course, so if you're coming to yoga class or have a massage scheduled, pull them up in the morning sometime and then bring them in with you. Or drop them off at my massage studio during the week.)

Just dandelions and clover. A little bag. A big bag. Every little bit helps. (And the dandelion flowers are fine to include.) The rabbits will need the bounty for many weeks to come ... and soon the goslings and ducklings will benefit from your donations as well. And, a happy, eating rabbit is a healing rabbit (or duckling or gosling or possum), and that makes the job easier for the Center's Vets and Rehabbers. (Several of the orphan bunnies had been losing weight ... but now that we've been bringing in dandelions and clover, they are eating again and gaining weight!)

Thank you in advance for helping out these wildlife patients.

Madison Yoga ~ Just Follow The Signs

In case you needed a reminder that yoga is all about being flexible ... we will be in new quarters for Madison yoga on Monday, April 6.

Just a temporary change ... the Madison School Board will be using the library this Monday.

Come in the front doors at Wetsel, as usual, and just follow the signs. Or look for some yoga mats. Or wander a bit. We will find each other.

We're currently scheduled to have our class in the "Teen Living" classroom, which seems nice and large, and -- best of all -- carpeted. (We'll be back at our regular yoga "home" in the library at our next class.)

We'll figure it out! Looking forward to seeing you ...

No Meditation On Sunday, March 1

There will be no Meditation Practice on Sunday, March 1.

I have no idea when all this snow and sleet is supposed to start falling. I have no idea when or if the roads might get slippery. It seems fine now, but I don't know what it will be doing at 6:00 p.m.

I often think that the point of my own meditation practice is to point out to me all that I don't know. And, the weather, and how it will unfold between 5 and 6 p.m., this evening is something I really don't know.

So, rather than have us all fret about whether we should plan to go to meditation this evening, let's plan instead to practice our meditation together -- in spirit -- from the warmth of our homes.

I hope you are warm and cozy, no matter what the weather, and I hope to see you at the next practice -- Sunday, March 15.

Wildlife Center Spring '09 Open Houses

The Wildlife Center of Virginia has announced its Spring Open House schedule. The Center offers open houses just twice a year – in the spring and fall. It’s a wonderful opportunity to visit the Center, see the Center’s medical facilities, and meet some of the education animals – including owls, eagles, possums, tortoises, and snakes – that live at the Center.

The open houses are free, but you must reserve your spot in advance, and the spots fill quickly. Here are the upcoming dates:
  • Sunday, March 1;
  • Sunday, March 15;
  • Sunday, March 29;
  • Sunday, April 5; and
  • Sunday, April 19

The Center will have three separate sessions each day – at 12:30 p.m., 2:00 p.m., and 3:30 p.m. This is a rare opportunity to see the inner workings of the nation’s premier wildlife hospital, as well as meet some of the wildlife that serve as the Center’s education staff and ambassadors. It’s well worth the pretty drive to Waynesboro!

For more info, visit the Wildlife Center’s website at www.wildlifecenter.org. Or to reserve a place at the open house contact the Center at 540.942.9453 or wildlife@wildlifecenter.org

The Frosty Skies

Meditation doesn't always have to be about chanting Sanskrit mantras or adhering only to the words of an ancient swami or guru. Sometimes a meaningful prayer will come into your heart organically. Sometimes you'll trip upon something you overhear ... or perhaps a line of a poem will inspire you. And, of course, the most exhilarating meditations are often the ones that bring you into perfect quiet with no words or thoughts to weigh you down.

You simply need to let your meditation evolve into a practice that is beneficial and meaningful to you.

This line is from a poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson (perhaps not the first person you think of when you are stretching out on your yoga mat or settling onto your meditation cushion). But, as our Meditation circle met last month just as winter was beginning, it seemed like just the right words to carry us through our practice.

Make Thou My Spirit Pure And Clear
As Are The Frosty Skies

The poem is from St. Agnes' Eve. Perhaps it has a place in your next quiet time.
